Sunshine in Exmouth
Last Saturday the band travelled down to a very sunny Exmouth to take part in the annual SWBBA Entertainment Contest. After a succession of really enjoyable rehearsals on our programme the band were looking forward to their performance. We were the first band to play on the contest stage at 10.30 in front of adjudicator John Winterflood. The performace began with Paul Lovett-Cooper's When Thunder Calls, complete with entrances to the stage by sections of the band when it was their turn to take the melody. This was followed by the march Keighley Moor and a brilliant solo rendition of Michael Buble's Cry Me A River from Dave Bulgin. The final two pieces were Chelsea Bridge and Enter the Galaxies all excellently introduced by our compere Tom Lissett who we cant thank enough for the wonderful job he did.
The performance was well received by the audience and adjudicator alike and we were eventually awarded 4th place after the other 12 bands had taken to the stage. Not quite enough for a trophy however we did return with one piece of silverware.... the award for best trombone section, well deserved by Dave Bulgin, Paul Slator and Caron Lissett.
The band later performed in the park adjacent to the pavillion along with the other 12 bands, providing free entertainment for the public and other bandsmen. It is this that sets Exmouth apart from the other contests we do and creates a lovely atmosphere for everyone involved.
Our thanks must go to those who helped us out on the day including Jimmy, Ed, Paul, Anne, Martin and Jas and of course thanks to our MD Dave Hatton for his hard work preparing the band for the contest.
