A Royal Visit
Much preparation has been going on over many months in preparation for today's visit by the Queen and Prince Philip as part of their West Country Jubilee Tour. It was truly an exciting day not only for the band but also for our home town of Crewkerne, Somerset. The band were honoured to have been asked to provide some music and to be a part of such a historic event. It was clear from our arrival at 8am that a lot of effort had been made by the people of Crewkerne and the Town Council to ensure a successful and memorable visit.
Due to the early start and with the band always wondering where their next meal may be coming from The White Hart had kindly agreed to open very early and cook us some bacon sandwiches and a give us a much needed cup of coffee. They also kindly let us store a lot of equipment there until it was needed so our thanks go to them.
Flags and bunting lined the streets and this was shortly followed by huge crowds in the town all eagerly awaiting the Royal arrival. It was lovely to see not only the local Crewkerne folk but also lots of children from local schools excited to see royalty for most likely the first time.
After an introduction from the Town Crier the band began with a March followed by a selection of music the children and adults in the audience would know including 'The Flintstones' and Lady Gaga's 'Poker Face.' The band took a short break to have a further cup of coffee and to warm up our cold fingers before continuing with 'Thunderbirds and a Medley of songs from 'Shrek' during which the crowd couldn't resist joining in with the actions of YMCA. The band even played Happy 100th Birthday for a lady in the receiving line, we hope this added to the special experience for her.
With the information that the Royal party were due shortly the excitement in the crowd further escalated and it was not long before we spotted the Police escort approaching. With this the band stood and began the National Anthem. I think I speak for us all when I say that we play the National Anthem frequently but today it felt special, we were actually playing it for the Queen! The door of the car opened just as we finished playing as planned and the Queen and Prince Philip were met by cheering, clapping and much flag waving from the crowd.
The Royal party made their way into the Town Hall where they were able to see a selection of local produce. After which they returned outside where the Queen unveiled a Commemorative Ham Stone Plaque. The Queen and Prince Philip then proceeded to talk to members of the receiving line and were handed gifts by children from a local school. Prince Philip even had a conversation with Dave our MD and Matt Read our solo cornet. Following this the Royal party proceeded onto Maiden Beech school where they travelled by air to Exeter to continue their tour.
Our thanks must go to Crewkerne Town Council and the general public for involving the band in a day that will remain in our memories and the band's history for many years to come. See more photos here
