The Book for all Occasions by Big Shiny Brass
Seven players from Phoenix Brass helped out local music publisher, Matt Kingston of Big Shiny Brass, in recording a series of pieces of music from his latest music for brass band, The Book for All Occasions. On a cold night a couple of weeks ago, in a church in Bodenhampton in Bridport we met with Big Shiny Brass' Matt Kingston to record a selection of pieces from his new work, The Book for All Occasions. A couple of hours later and it was all done. Matt was pleased, he had his recordings and was now ready to take them off to the forthcoming brass band competitions where he was exibiting.
Big Shiny Brass is a newly founded publishing company founded by Matt based in Bridport, Dorset. Matt approached the band over 6 months ago after having seen us perform in the United Reform Church in Bridport, with a view to striking up a partnership to trial and record some of his music. Matt is himself an established cornet player, sadly as of yet we have not been able to tear him away from his compositions to get him to come along and play with the band.
Matt has had a very busy first year in business, arranging numerous pieces for Brass Bands and Youth Brass Bands in particular. Included in the Big Shiny Brass library is a volume of pieces for Youth Bands, a selection of Christmas Carols, numerous arrangements for full band, and a new Cornet Method. It seems that Matt is not letting up either, with two new arrangements for full band being prepared for release in the coming weeks.
We bumped into Matt again at this weekends SWBBA contest in Torquay, where he had a trade stand showcasing his music. The recordings were playing in the background, and they could not have been too bad as he admitted he had a good day and managed to sell a number of his new band books, whilst we shared a drink at the bar.
Everyone at Phoenix wishes Matt all the very best for the future.
