Bridgwater Salvation Army Music Ministries weekend

Saturday 23rd April (St George’s Day) found the band booked to play for the opening evening of the Bridgwater Salvation Army Music Ministries weekend. Trying to keep with a patriotic theme the programme almost entirely contained music by English composers or arrangers. However, our MD, David Boorer, couldn’t tenuously link anything English to Evelyn Glennie’s (Scottish) composition “A Little Prayer”, arranged by Bob Childs (Welsh). We welcomed to the band our guest soloist for the evening, Rob Richardson. Rob is the principle baritone of Fairey’s band and he had driven down from Liverpool to play “Napoli” (arranged by an Englishman) and “Carrickfergus” - also arranged by an Englishman. Needless to say Rob played them both brilliantly and they were well received by the eager audience. Phoenix’s principle Eb player, Phil Chigley, also performed a solo that evening; the beautiful arrangement of “Bring Him Home” from Les Miserables. The sonorous sound of the tuba matched the mood of the piece and Phil performed it wonderfully.

The evening was a great success and a “fabulous” start to the Ministries weekend, said concert organiser, Malcolm French.

The band are now working at a section of music for our regular summer engagements, as well as developing a programme for the Exmouth Entertainment contest in early September. With “only” twenty three rehearsals before the National Finals it is an exciting, if not busy, time for the band.

Released On 5th May 2016
