Phoenix at the National Brass Band Finals
Sunday 18th September brought sunshine, smiles and the band’s long awaited journey to the National Brass Band finals at Cheltenham Racecourse. It was an early start for most of the band to arrive for the contest’s draw at 8:30am, but a number 14 playing position meant some could go back to their cars, or caravans, for a snooze!
The band had been working hard for this day over the last few months, including a couple of visits from Nigel Seaman and his “little friend” - the dreaded woodblock. Nigel’s wealth of knowledge and skill at band training brings an added dimension to the band’s playing and awareness of ensemble, so it was with confidence that we went to Cheltenham.
An impromptu rehearsal on the racecourse caravan site, a few more coffees and it was time to compete. The Centaur is a funny old venue to play in. It is not as dry as Torquay’s Riviera Centre, but neither is it that resonant for brass bands. However, that being said, the band performed well. There was contrasting emotion and excitement in their playing. They phrased beautifully and added a lyrical style to ‘Lake of the Moon’ by Kevin Houben, that, I felt, the other band’s didn’t give.
It wasn’t to be though. A few nerves and some intonation issues meant the band finished in 16th place. It’s a great achievement to qualify for the “Nationals”, and the band returned to Somerset proud to represent their county as West of England Champions, ready for the onslaught of Christmas, and their return to the National 2nd Section in 2017.
