Singing for Somerset
On Saturday 29th March Phoenix Brass (Crewkerne) were proud to ‘do their bit’ at a concert in Crewkerne, organised by John Perry from Crewkerne’s ‘Crewners’. He planned the concert to raise funds to help the flood victims of Somerset get back on their feet after what has been a traumatic winter.
The Crewners are a group of singers based in Crewkerne and they entertained us with a variety of music largely from stage and screen. In addition folk music was provided by Jeroka and a bit of jazz from the Dark Town Strutters. If that wasn’t enough, John had also arranged for local vocal soloists Alex Best and Ros Broad to complete this feast of local talent. Holding it altogether was the well-known local thespian Richard Walters, who compared the evening with his ‘unique’ humour!
Adam Glynn, who also arranged our opening piece, ably led our performance. This fantastic selection of John Williams’ film music included Indiana Jones, ET and Jaws, with its unmistakable introduction from the basses. To prove that brass bands do have a sense of humour we also played Alan Fernie’s arrangement of ‘Singing in the Rain’, which was well received by a supportive audience.
As you can imagine with this line up it was a long concert but none the less enjoyable. Congratulations to John and his helpers who raised over £800 a superb effort.
Since this concert plans have begun for a joint concert featuring the Crewners and Phoenix Brass. Watch this space…!
