SWBBA Championships 2012
Last Saturday Phoenix took to the stage in the Second Section at Torquay for the SWBBA annual brass band championships. The pressure was on us as the test piece chosen for our section was entitle "The Rise of the Phoenix" by Darrol Barry. With this in mind, the band were mindful of the headline writers and were hoping to pull out all of the stops to get a good result.
Preperations for the contest were a little disjointed, with the late loss of our principle euphonium player (John Woods recently left us to join Sherborne band, see earlier news article) but on the whole the band was well prepared and ready for the day. We were up against some of the better bands in the second section, so we knew we had to give a good performance. Sadly a few nerves and the odd problem with tuning and intonation was our downfall. Whilst our overall performance was good, we werent good enough to beat the other 5 bands in our section.
We will have to dust ourselves off and get our teeth into the test piece for the area contest for next March.
A few thanks must be made:
- Jim Packer / Martin Berzins for helping on percussion
- Yeovil band for the loan of their timpani for our rehearsals
